Professor Thas Nirmalathas has been appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology having been Interim Dean since January 2024.

Academic and Professional Leadership

As a Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Professor Nirmalathas is deeply engaged in cutting-edge research, exploring areas such as optical wireless network integration, photonic computing, heterogeneous photonic integrated circuits and advanced wireless communication technologies.  Professor Nirmalathas has served in many roles at the University of Melbourne since joining in 1997, including guiding research initiatives as Deputy Dean (Research), leading interdisciplinary initiatives as Institute Director for the Melbourne Networked Society Institute, and nurturing the culture of entrepreneurship as the Co-Founder and Director of the Melbourne Accelerator Program.

Background and Research

Professor Nirmalathas is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) USA and Optica USA. He has been recognised for his international leadership to information and communication technology through his activities at IEEE Future Networks Initiative and IEEE Photonics Society’s Emerging Technologies Task Force.
